SMC³’s Emily Phillippi, data analyst, recently sat down to chat about her role, the importance of building strong relationships with customers and how she has helped customers overcome challenges. Get to know more about Emily in this behind-the-scenes interview.

What’s your area of expertise at SMC³, and why do you like working in that area?
I am a data analyst at SMC³. I build several of our products, such as single origin exports files, create reports, manage access to our products, and assist in new product development. I enjoy cleaning and transforming data into information that our customers can use.
How important is the human aspect of data services?
The human aspect is critical to data services. We use data and technology to help our customers solve their business problems. This requires strong relationships and good communication with our customers, internal sales teams, development teams, and other stakeholders to build quality products with the needed functionality that is delivered in a timely manner.
What sort of problems do you solve for customers?
Through updating and building products, I help our customers rate shipments, determine transit times, and thus manage their businesses successfully. I extract and reformat data into layouts our customers need to feed the data into their transportation management systems.
Furthermore, I help customers address unmet needs by aiding in the design and build of a new product that will help return more accurate shipment information. With each product, I help address our customers’ challenges.
Do you have any on-the-job stories that illustrate how you’ve helped customers overcome challenges?
As one example, I worked on a project for a global healthcare company that experienced a challenge of conducting a North American bid event involving multiple internal business units under one RFP. The company selected SMC³ due to our strong reputation for expertise and leadership in the LTL industry.
Within the data services team, I cleansed, analyzed, and aggregated the transportation division’s data from multiple sources to ensure standardization and efficiency and ran numerous scenarios accounting for various constraints and preferences. This allowed the transportation division to leverage SMC³ tools like Bid$ense® and BatchMark® XL to process the scenarios quickly and accurately. The responsibility for business award decisions remained solely with the company’s transportation division.
With the other project team members, I collaborated daily with the transportation division to ensure the project’s key objectives were exceeded.
When you’re not working, what are some of your hobbies?
When I am not working, I enjoy the outdoors and seeing new sights. I love to hike with my nine-year old dog, Ellie. I enjoy traveling to see new cultures, eat amazing food, and meet awesome people. When I am not on the road, I am prone to bake too many sweets and binge watch Star Wars.
Customers rely on SMC³’s LTL transportation data, technology and expertise to support the entire supply chain, meeting the needs of customers with industry-leading speed, reliability and performance. Learn more about SMC³’s solutions here and download resources here.
